A surrey is the four-wheeled pedal carriage that seats a whole group under one canopy, and Wheel Fun has wrapped theirs in red, white and blue LEDs for the country's 250th — which makes rolling along the FDR Boardwalk after dark look considerably more absurd and more fun than it has any right to. The boardwalk runs right along Lower New York Bay with the Verrazzano lit overhead. First-come, first-served, and the season ends with Labor Day weekend.
What to expect
You rent at the Wheel Fun kiosk and ride the flat, wide boardwalk along the water with the bridge and harbor in view. Surreys seat several adults plus small children under a canopy, and the LED lighting comes on as it gets dark. Rentals are hourly and go out first-come, first-served.
