Yuen Woo-ping choreographed The Matrix, Crouching Tiger and Kill Bill, and directed Drunken Master before any of it. MoMA's five-decade survey treats him as an author rather than a hired hand, and this weekend is the sweet spot: Tsui Hark's two Once Upon a Time in China films back to back on Saturday, and the rarely projected Hong Kong cut of The Grandmaster on Sunday.

What to expect

Six screenings across the weekend in the Debra and Leon Black Family Film Center. Friday brings Wing Chun and Kung Fu Hustle; Saturday pairs Once Upon a Time in China with its sequel; Sunday runs Ip Man 4: The Finale into Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster in the Hong Kong cut.

Good to know

  • Screenings are in MoMA's basement film theaters, Floors T1 and T2
  • Film tickets are separate from gallery admission, though museum admission includes same-day film access
  • The Grandmaster screens in the Hong Kong cut, which is not the version released in U.S. theaters
  • Most titles repeat later in the run if you miss one
  • MoMA is at 11 West 53 Street, closest to Fifth Av–53 St on the E and M
