Twenty years in, the fair is where small presses launch, where artists sell directly, and where you can spend six hours and still miss a floor. Printed Matter and MoMA PS1 are both marking fiftieth anniversaries this year.
What to expect
Dense, loud, crowded rooms of tables and booths spread over multiple floors plus outdoor space, with lines at the entrance during peak afternoon hours. Bring cash and a tote. Programming runs alongside the booths - launches, readings, talks and performances - and the schedule is published on the fair site. Advance registration is strongly encouraged because the fair regularly reaches capacity.
