Sean Aiken already runs Neapolitan pies at Seany Pizza a few blocks away, and he has said plainly that the Rockaways deserve more than the standard New York slice. Crown Square is his answer: thick, crispy-edged Detroit squares, open year-round rather than closing when the beach crowd leaves. A pizzeria that survives February in the Rockaways is worth the A train.
What to expect
Detroit-style pan pizza with toppings running from basil and Parmigiano-Reggiano to sausage and onions, or pepperoni with Gorgonzola and Mike's Hot Honey. Salads and Buffalo wings round out the menu. Open year-round at 9904 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, a block off the boardwalk.
Good to know
- Detroit-style square pies, not New York rounds
- Open year-round, not just through beach season
- From Sean Aiken, who also runs Seany Pizza on the boardwalk
- At 9904 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at Beach 99th Street
- Closest subway is Beach 98 St on the A shuttle; the Rockaway ferry lands nearby
