After the US left Afghanistan, the suburban-style base at Bagram left behind uniforms, gym equipment, electronics and tents, and Aziz Hazara spent years collecting what scrap dealers had not resold. At SculptureCenter the debris becomes an archaeology of a 20-year war most Americans only saw on screens. If you want art that makes geopolitics physical, this LIC show is worth the trip.
What to expect
SculptureCenter occupies a former trolley repair shop with a lofty main gallery and a cavernous lower level. Hazara's objects are displayed as a catalog of what was left behind, alongside two other new fall exhibitions by Cevdet Erek and Yining Fei.
