Amano is a genuinely major figure whose work almost never gets a serious museum treatment in New York, and putting him in a beaux-arts academy gallery rather than a fan convention is the interesting move. Arakawa and Gins in the next room is one of the strangest bodies of work the city has produced. Admission to the Academy's exhibitions is free, which makes the trip to Audubon Terrace an easy yes.
