New Year's Eve in NYC

New Year's Eve in Times Square is free, has no tickets, and works first-come first-served — the single most misunderstood fact about it. Viewing areas open at 3pm on December 31, the celebration begins shortly before 6pm when the Ball is raised atop One Times Square, and the Ball makes its 60-second descent at exactly 11:59pm. There are no public restrooms and no food vendors inside the pens, all bags are searched, and once you leave a viewing area you cannot return to it.
