Seventy-six editions makes this one of the oldest continuously running outdoor art shows in New York City, and it has never lost its neighborhood character: you buy directly off the fence from the person who made the work. Snug Harbor's 83-acre campus of Greek Revival buildings and gardens is worth the ferry on its own, and the Fence Show gives you a reason to walk the lawn with a beer in hand.

What to expect

Artists' work hung along fencing and set on tables across the museum's front lawn, with the makers standing behind it, so expect to talk to people rather than browse in silence. A biergarten operates on site. The museum galleries are open the same afternoon, and the wider Snug Harbor campus - botanical gardens, the Chinese Scholar's Garden, other tenants - is a short walk away.
