This is the marquee week of Gustavo Dudamel's first season in charge of the New York Philharmonic, and the program is built to be argued about: a brand-new score nobody has heard against one of the most played symphonies in the repertoire. Tania Leon's Imagenes mestizas is a Philharmonic commission getting its world premiere here, so this is the only place on earth it exists right now. Mahler's Fifth then gets the full Dudamel treatment.

What to expect

Two works in the Wu Tsai Theater at David Geffen Hall, running roughly an hour and forty-five minutes with one intermission. Leon's Imagenes mestizas opens the night, heard publicly for the first time anywhere, before Mahler's Fifth takes over: funeral march, scherzo, the string-and-harp Adagietto, and a rondo finale that sends the brass out at full stretch.
