A genuine 180-year-old agricultural fair, not a nostalgia act - prize Holsteins and a youth livestock sale sharing 162 acres with a full midway and a grandstand. The city has street fairs; it does not have this, and Rhinebeck in late August is worth the train on its own. Kids 11 and under are free, parking is free, and the gate is twenty dollars.
What to expect
Give it five or six hours - the barns alone eat an hour if you actually look, and the midway is a separate wristband and a separate commitment. Door to door from Grand Central it is a full day, so pick Friday or Saturday when the fair runs until 10pm rather than the shorter Sunday. Bring cash for food stands and shoes you can stand in all day.
