The Frolic has been running since 1975 and still reads as a neighbourhood event rather than a franchise street fair - the food booths are drawn from one of the most cuisine-dense stretches in Brooklyn, and the stages book local acts. Cortelyou Road itself is a good half-mile walk, and the Victorian Flatbush blocks a step off it are among the strangest and prettiest residential streets in the city. Free, all day, no ticket.

What to expect

Eight blocks of closed street between Coney Island and Ocean Avenues, packed with food stalls, craft and community tables, several music stages, a wine and beer garden, and a kids' strip of pony rides, carnival games and a climbing wall run by the NYPD. Pizza-eating contests punctuate the afternoon. Popular stalls and rides do sell out.

Yes. Admission to the Flatbush Frolic is free and no RSVP is required. You only pay individual vendors for food, rides and goods.

How do I get there?

Take the Q to Cortelyou Road, which comes up in the middle of the fair. The festival runs along Cortelyou between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue.

Is there much for children?

Yes. Pony rides, carnival games, arts and crafts activities and a rock-climbing wall hosted by the NYPD all run through the day.
