This is the garlic festival other garlic festivals are copying - a Kiwanis fundraiser that grew into one of the largest agricultural fairs in the Northeast, drawing tens of thousands to a Saugerties ball field two hours north of Port Authority. You come for the growers' tables, where you buy hardneck varieties you will never see in a supermarket, and you stay for the deep-fried, garlic-laced everything. Every dollar goes back to community causes.
What to expect
A large open field packed with grower stalls, food vendors, craft tables, music and cooking demos, plus long walks between sections. The garlic itself is sold by the bulb, the braid and the pound, and serious buyers arrive early on Saturday before the best varieties sell out. It runs rain or shine, and the ground turns to mud fast in wet weather.
