In 1977 Marianne Wex photographed how men sprawl and women fold themselves small in public, and MoMA now puts her entire project in conversation with Nona Faustine, Martine Gutierrez, K8 Hardy, Yuki Kihara, Joiri Minaya, Paulina Olowska and Wendy Red Star. Every one of these works is on view at MoMA for the first time. It is one of MoMA's newest photography shows and a sharp counterpoint to the headline exhibitions upstairs.
What to expect
The second-floor galleries set Wex's grid-like documentary sequences against large contemporary photographs and staged self-portraits that question who gets to take up space. Expect sharp visual comparisons and plenty to talk about afterward.
