Verdi's Otello returns to the Metropolitan Opera, with the matinee transmitted to cinemas worldwide in the Live in HD series.

Otello is Verdi's most dramatically taut opera — Shakespeare distilled to a storm, a handkerchief and a murder — and it demands a heroic tenor the Met casts only when it has one. The HD matinee gets the strongest cast in peak form. At under three hours it is one of the most gripping afternoons the Met offers. The Met's Otello production is among its most visually striking, with a storm scene that fills the enormous stage.

What to expect

Sung in Italian with Met Titles; about two and three-quarter hours with one intermission. Full house and cameras on HD days.

Good to know

  • Other dates in the run are easier to get than the HD matinee
  • Rush tickets released online day-of
  • Metropolitan Opera House — 1 train to 66th St
  • The cinema transmission is ticketed separately
  • Family Circle seats are the cheapest and sound superb

Going? Keep it.
