Chakaia Booker is famous for sinuous, monumental abstractions made from recycled rubber tires and stainless steel, and she first tested her ideas at Socrates in 1994 and 1997. For the park's 40th anniversary, three of her large works stand outdoors by the East River. If you like sculpture you can walk around, touch the context of and photograph against the skyline, this makes a strong pairing with the Sanford Biggers works nearby.
What to expect
Expect three large outdoor sculptures with the textured, twisting surfaces of cut tires, set in the open park. The visit is informal and self-guided, and the waterfront views and lawn make it easy to linger.
