Olmo picked up a Michelin Bib Gourmand in its first year, and now the team has taken the space next door and handed it to the siblings behind Cicatriz in Mexico City. Peral is the casual half of the block: a $6 taco counter that opens at breakfast for coffee and tamales and keeps going until 10 at night, with a menu that pushes vegetables, wild greens and guisados to the front. It is the rare serious opening you can eat at twice in one day.
What to expect
Tacos come on corn or flour tortillas with a heavy emphasis on guisados: a chile relleno ancho rehydrated with piloncillo and vinegar, stuffed with Oaxaca cheese and chopped into the tortilla ($6); braised seasonal wild greens ($6); seared rib-eye with jalapeno escabeche ($8); and goat birria in a cheese-crusted flour tortilla ($8).
