Spartacus was Kubrick’s only work-for-hire epic and the one he half-disowned, which has never stopped it from being overwhelming at scale. The Paris gives it a single 70mm date in a 535-seat single-screen house with a real 15-minute intermission, the way roadshow pictures were built to be watched. Three and a half hours of Douglas, Olivier, Ustinov and Laughton, then out onto 58th Street.
