There is no cheaper way to feel like you live in a movie about New York than lying on Bryant Park's lawn in savasana with the Empire State Building in your peripheral vision. The class is free, led by rotating instructors from the city's studios — the series has hosted Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee — and pitched so a first-timer can follow the whole hour. It is the strongest free midweek pick in midtown.

What to expect

Check in at the lawn corners marked with pink barricades or tents, then claim a patch of grass and roll out your mat — the closer to the front, the better you'll hear. The class is a full hour of accessible flow, cued loudly enough to carry across a very large crowd, and it fills up substantially before it starts. Expect several hundred people, plenty of first-timers, and a skyline view from the mat.

Good to know

  • B, D, F or M to 42nd St-Bryant Park sits at the park's northeast corner
  • Bring your own mat and water — the park does not lend mats
  • Pre-registration through the park's Eventbrite links is encouraged, and arriving early for check-in is smart
  • Check in at the lawn corners marked by pink barricades or tents
  • The lawn is closed in wet conditions, so a rain forecast can move or cancel the class
  • The evening session is livestreamed on the park's Instagram if you can't get there

Common questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Bryant Park Yoga is free and open to the public; pre-registering online just speeds up check-in.

Do I need to bring a mat?

Yes — the park does not provide mats. A towel works in a pinch but the lawn can be damp.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Very. The instructors teach to a huge mixed crowd, so cues are clear and options are offered throughout.
