For a day, a full block of Forsyth Street between Division Street and East Broadway becomes car-free, and Fuzhou America runs open mics in the middle of it. The volunteer-run nonprofit works to connect young Fuzhounese Americans with their roots, and its earlier Chinatown open mics raised money for the group and the Chinatown Basketball Club. If you want to see local Chinatown talent up close, far from a club stage, stop by.
What to expect
A closed street near the Manhattan Bridge with a mic and speakers set up for whoever signs up, plus neighbors watching and passersby drifting in. Performances vary with who shows up, and the surrounding East Broadway corridor is full of Fuzhounese bakeries, noodle shops and dumpling spots for between sets.
