Few New Yorkers realize you can paddle the Bronx River, and this estuary route shows its wildest contrast: egrets and shorebirds working the mudflats against a backdrop of rail bridges and concrete plants. The Bronx River Alliance supplies the canoes and gear and guides you through the tides and currents to where the river meets the East River. If you have some paddling experience and want an outdoor morning that feels far from the city, sign up.

What to expect

A safety briefing at the launch, then a guided group paddle in canoes downriver through the saltwater section and back. Expect tides, wind and occasional boat traffic, plus good birding along the banks.

Good to know

  • Participants must be 14 or older.
  • It is an intermediate paddle; some basic canoe or kayak experience is recommended.
  • Boats, paddles and life jackets are provided.
