Van Cortlandt Park packs more than 20 miles of trails of varying difficulty into the northwest Bronx, and on this morning hike Van Cortlandt Park Alliance staff lead the way. It's reserved for Alliance members and 26.2 in '26 participants working toward 26.2 park miles by year's end, and every step counts toward the goal. If you've signed up and want guided miles instead of solo laps, this is your morning.

What to expect

Participants meet at the Friends' Compost Site and set out on a staff-led hike along the park's trails, with guides sharing the landscape along the way. Expect a moderate-paced group walk of about 90 minutes. The distance counts toward your 26.2 in '26 total.

Good to know

  • It's for Van Cortlandt Park Alliance members and registered 26.2 in '26 participants, not a general drop-in hike.
  • Wear trail-ready shoes, since some park trails are rocky, muddy or hilly.
  • Bring water and dress in layers for a cool autumn morning.
  • The 1 train terminates at Van Cortlandt Park–242 St on the park's western edge. Confirm the compost-site meeting point with VCPA before you go.
  • Proceeds from 26.2 in '26 fund the Alliance's environmental education, internship and stewardship programs.

Going? Keep it.
