For an afternoon, Water Street along Stapleton's Tappen Park is closed to traffic and handed over to pedestrians, kids and the neighborhood's small businesses. Stapleton Saturdays is run by the Van Duzer Street Civic Association with backing from NYC DOT's Public Space Equity Program. If you're on the North Shore and want an easy, free outing a short walk from the Stapleton SIR station, stroll over.

What to expect

Expect a car-free block of Water Street next to Tappen Park with family-friendly programming and nearby shops and eateries spilling toward the street. Activities vary each Saturday. It's a drop-in neighborhood event, so wander, let kids roam and pair it with a walk through the park.

Good to know

  • The Staten Island Railway's Stapleton station is a short walk away, and the free ferry to St. George links to the SIR.
  • The block of Water Street between Beach Street and Canal Street is closed to cars, so leave the car elsewhere.
  • It's free and drop-in, with no tickets or registration.
  • Tappen Park is right there for shade and benches.
  • Programming changes each week, so check the Stapleton Saturdays or Van Duzer Civic social pages for the lineup.
