Volunteer astronomers wheel out their telescopes on a pier jutting into the Hudson and let anyone line up for a look at whatever the night sky offers, with the river and the Jersey skyline as backdrop. It is the last of the series' monthly Saturday sessions this year, so there is no next month. If you have never looked through a real telescope in the middle of Manhattan, go.
What to expect
A row of telescopes along Pier I with short lines at each, staffed by members of the Amateur Astronomers Association who explain what you are seeing. People drift between scopes, ask questions and linger on the pier as the city lights come up.
Good to know
- Take the 1, 2 or 3 train to 72 St and walk west to the river at West 70th Street.
- Sessions may be canceled for clouds or bad weather; check Riverside Park Conservancy's social channels before heading out.
- Kids love it; no astronomy knowledge needed.
- Bring a layer, as it gets breezy on the pier after dark.
