Walkers gather on John Street beside the South Street Seaport, then loop roughly three miles along the East River toward Battery Park, with rest stops on the way. Run by the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York, the walk funds programs for New Yorkers living with epilepsy and seizures, and it is free for everyone this year. If epilepsy touches your family, this is the weekend's most purposeful waterfront stroll.

What to expect

Check in at John Street and Front Street, where participants mingle with sponsor tables before a program of speakers, awards and presentations. Then the walk heads southbound along the East River toward Battery Park and loops back, at a relaxed pace with places to rest.

Good to know

  • Enter at John Street and Front Street; the 2/3 at Wall St and the A/C, J/Z and 4/5 at Fulton St are all a short walk.
  • The route is about three miles along the waterfront with several resting spots, so it suits kids and casual walkers.
  • Walking is free this year; register ahead with EFMNY so your team is counted.
  • Wear sneakers and bring water and sun protection; the East River esplanade has little shade.
  • Questions go to organizer contact charper@efmny.org.
