The Vanguard's triangular basement has hosted jazz since 1935, and Bill Charlap is one of the great interpreters of the American songbook, playing with a swing the New Yorker called relentless. With David Wong and Carl Allen it is a classic piano trio in the room made for them. If you have never been to the Vanguard, a Charlap week is the perfect introduction.
What to expect
You walk down a steep staircase into a small, red-walled room with tightly packed seats facing a tiny stage. Sets are short and focused, the room goes quiet when the music starts, and there is no food service. Charlap's sets lean on standards and the Great American Songbook, played with a light, swinging touch.

- Seating is first come, first served; arrive at doors for a good seat.
