Beneath Green-Wood's meadow is a web of fungi most visitors never think about, and this program lets you help map it. Researchers Whitney Bauck and Lauren Wilson start with a primer on soil science and mycorrhizal fungi, then hand you the tools to take real samples, and explain how they sequence the DNA in the lab. If you're into mushrooms, ecology or getting your hands dirty for science, this is a rare behind-the-scenes look.
What to expect
Check in by name at The Green-House, then walk about 30 minutes over hilly, grassy ground to the meadow for sampling. Back at base, the leaders explain how the samples are processed and how fungal DNA gets sequenced in the lab. The program is aimed at adults, but children are welcome.
