Special EventBrooklynParks Department

Health screenings, cancer and mental-health pavilions, live performances and kids' activities take over Sunset Park's Center Lawn, free to walk in.

Sunset Park's Center Lawn becomes a daylong health fair and block party, with free screenings, pavilions for cancer care, mental health and nutrition, and performances between the tents. Last year's 10th edition drew 1,500+ residents and 40+ partners, including NYU Langone, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell. If you want a useful, family-friendly afternoon on a Brooklyn hilltop lawn, this is it.

What to expect

Expect the lawn laid out in themed pavilions: health screenings, cancer services, mental health, and food and nutrition, staffed by hospitals and community groups. Cultural performances and family activities run alongside, so people tend to wander between screenings and entertainment at their own pace.

Good to know

  • Take the R to 45th St or 53rd St and walk a few blocks uphill to the park
  • Free and open to the public; popular screenings can draw lines, so arrive early if you want one
  • Last year's entrance was at 44th St and 6th Ave, so check signage for this year's entry point
  • Bring water and sun protection for an afternoon outside on the lawn
  • Good for families: there's kids' programming alongside the health pavilions
  • Stay for the view: the top of Sunset Park looks out over the harbor and the Manhattan skyline

Do I need insurance or ID to get a screening?

The event is built to give immigrant New Yorkers free access to wellness resources. Check with individual providers on site about any requirements for specific screenings.
