Hundreds of glowing lanterns drifting across a pond at dusk make one of the most photographed scenes you can find on Staten Island's South Shore. You spend the afternoon with food trucks and music, write something on your lantern, then launch it together as the sky darkens. If you want a date night or family memory that looks like a movie still, this is it.

What to expect

Gates open in the afternoon to food trucks and activities, lantern decorating starts before sunset, and the launch runs for about an hour into the evening. Expect a crowd sitting on blankets along the shoreline waiting for the light show.

Good to know

  • The Staten Island Railway's Prince's Bay and Annadale stations are the closest
  • Ticket prices rise closer to the event and at the gate
  • Each ticket covers one lantern kit
  • Bring a blanket and layers for the waterfront evening
  • Popular with couples and families
