How to do Fan Week for free

Register your Fan Access Pass in the US Open app before you go — every adult needs one, and gate lines move much faster with it ready. Grounds open at 9:30–10 AM; mornings are the best window to stand courtside at the practice courts while the top seeds warm up, often closer than any ticketed seat will ever put you. Qualifying matches run all day on the outer courts with open seating, and the food village and grounds shops operate as they do during the tournament. Weekday visits are noticeably quieter than the two Fan Week weekends.

Kids' Day and the free weekends

Arthur Ashe Kids' Day kicks off Fan Week on Sunday, Aug 23 — a full free family day with clinics, games, and a show inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The closing Fan Week weekend (Aug 28–29) pairs final qualifying rounds with the last free practice sessions before the main draw. Both weekends' sessions are ranked on the Stumblday board alongside everything else happening in the city, so you can build the rest of your day around Flushing Meadows.

Main-draw tickets without overpaying

Day-session grounds passes are the value play once the tournament starts — they cover every court except Arthur Ashe, and early-round drama lives on the outer courts anyway. Evening Ashe sessions are the premium ticket; resale prices typically dip closest to the session start. Labor Day weekend (Sep 5–6) falls on the round of 16, one of the best tennis-per-dollar stretches of the fortnight.

Is US Open Fan Week really free?

Yes — grounds admission is free for all seven days (Aug 23–29, 2026), including qualifying matches, practice courts, and Arthur Ashe Kids' Day. You must register a free Fan Access Pass in the US Open app; every guest 18 and older needs their own.

When does the 2026 US Open start?

Main-draw play begins Sunday, August 30, 2026 and runs through the finals on September 13. Fan Week precedes it, August 23–29, with free grounds admission.

How do I get to the US Open from Manhattan?

Take the 7 train or the LIRR Port Washington branch to Mets–Willets Point — about 35 minutes from Grand Central by subway or 20 by LIRR from Penn Station/Grand Central Madison. Both drop you at the tennis center's gates.

Can I see top players without buying a ticket?

Yes — during Fan Week the practice courts are free and open, and the sport's biggest names train there daily. Morning sessions in the last few days before the main draw (Aug 27–29) have the densest star sightings.
