Every weekend, two blocks of 31st Avenue in Astoria close to cars and become a neighborhood living room, with lawn games, sidewalk chalk, vendor booths and live bands or poets on the pavement. Volunteers run it as a people-first public space, and the September lineup mixes markets, cookouts and classes with plenty of room to just sit outside. If you want a low-key, free Astoria afternoon, walk over, grab food nearby and linger.
What to expect
You'll find the street fully closed between 33rd and 35th Streets, with games like cornhole set out, chalk for kids and booths from local makers and vendors. Depending on the day, there may be a live set, a yoga class, a market or a community cookout. Many people just wander through or settle in for a while.
