Mexican Independence Day (September 16) arrives early on Staten Island as La Colmena, Port Richmond's immigrant-worker community center, leads its seventh annual parade down Port Richmond Avenue. Expect Folklórico dancers, live music and colorful floats rolling through the heart of the borough's Mexican business corridor. It's a free, family-scaled counterpart to the giant Madison Avenue parade the following weekend.

What to expect

A two-hour procession along Port Richmond Avenue featuring traditional Mexican Folklórico dance troupes, live music and colorful cultural displays from local community groups. The route runs through Port Richmond's Mexican business strip, so the avenue's taquerias and bakeries make an easy post-parade stop.
