The Bronx River Alliance puts neighbors on the water from the 219th Street launch in Shoelace Park, with small waves heading out for about half an hour at a time. Seeing the leafy Bronx River from a boat is a very different view of the borough. If you have never paddled in the city, this is one of the easiest free ways to try.
What to expect
Check in at the boat launch, sign a waiver, get a short paddling orientation, then head out with a group of about 15 for 30 to 40 minutes. Waves go out on the hour, and it is not a guided tour, so you set your own pace nearby. Bring clothes you don't mind splashing.
Good to know
- No pre-registration; spots go first come, first served per hourly wave.
- Minors must come with an adult, who signs their waiver.
- Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet.
- The 2 and 5 to 219th Street or Gun Hill Road are closest.
- Waves are small, so arriving early improves your odds of an earlier slot.
