St. Catherine's Park, one of the busiest parks per square foot in the city, gives its basketball and handball courts over to a full day of kids' activities. Past editions have packed in inflatables, face painting, crafts, carnival booths, jumbo games, a photo booth and an obstacle course, all free. If you have kids on the Upper East Side and need an easy, no-cost outing, this is the weekend's best option close to home.

What to expect

The courts along First Avenue fill with bounce houses, game stations and craft tables, with music playing and families moving between activities. Past years have been organized by NYC Parks with the local City Council office, so expect a neighborhood-block-party feel, with lines at the most popular inflatables and a playground next door for breaks.

Good to know

  • Nearest trains: Q to 72nd St–2nd Ave, or 6 to 68th St–Hunter College, about a 10-minute walk.
  • Go early; the inflatables get lines once the neighborhood arrives.
  • Wear sneakers and bring socks, since bounce houses usually require them.
  • The park's playground and restrooms are next to the event courts.
  • Best for toddlers through elementary-age kids; strollers are fine on the flat courts.

Going? Keep it.
