Chef Nuno Sousa already made Leitão a West Village favorite, and Galo is his bigger, more ambitious follow-up a few blocks away. The draw is the table-sized centerpieces, a whole stuffed rooster and a roasted goat leg, backed by petiscos, seafood, rice dishes and a list reaching from Vinho Verde to Azores volcanic wines and Douro ports. Bring a group, order the rooster and make an evening of it.

What to expect

A 52-seat room designed by Lisbon's Studio Asolfi to feel like a Portuguese wine cellar, with handmade ceramics and 10 seats at the bar. Friday service starts in the late afternoon and Saturday opens at midday, running late both nights; the restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday.

Good to know

  • Book through Resy; the calendar shows walk-in availability even when tables are taken.
  • Groups get the most out of the menu by sharing a large-format dish plus several petiscos.
  • Solo diners and couples can aim for one of the bar seats and graze on petiscos.
  • The 1 train at Christopher Street and the West 4th Street station are both a short walk.
  • Wine lovers should ask about Portuguese bottles rarely seen on New York lists.
  • Galo hosts private events, with inquiries through its website.
