His quartet with pianist Micah Thomas plays with a hymn-like intensity that suits the room. If you have never been to the Vanguard, a Wilkins set is a perfect first night.

The Vanguard is small, dark and unchanged, with first-come seating at close-packed tables. Two sets run each night; seating opens before each set, and the house asks for quiet listening with phones silenced. There is no food, only drinks.
