Thirty gardens that neighbors built on vacant Loisaida lots host more than 50 free events over ten days, and the final weekend is dense: the Anarchist Book Fair at La Plaza Cultural, a Kids Day with the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre and Bengali puppets, and Matthieu Eveillard back at Green Oasis. It is the East Village at its most homegrown. If you want to wander between tiny stages in secret green spaces, spend an afternoon hopping gardens.
What to expect
Expect intimate performances and workshops in gardens tucked between tenements along Avenues B, C and D, many with just a few rows of chairs or open grass. Visitors typically map a route and drift between gardens, catching a set here and a workshop there.
