Pigeonwing Dance brings intricate, syncopated contemporary choreography to St. Nicholas Park's James Baldwin Lawn, just off West 135th Street. Led by Guggenheim Fellow Gabrielle Lamb and presented by New York City Center and Jacob's Pillow, the troupe is best known for its Carpet Series, danced on a Persian-style rug at 100+ NYC spots. If you've never seen serious contemporary dance up close in a park, start here.
What to expect
Expect contemporary dance performed outdoors at close range, with audiences gathering around the performers on the lawn and plaza by the park's 135th Street entrance. The company's outdoor work has often been staged as short drop-in pieces, so you can usually catch part of the program even if you arrive mid-way.
Good to know
- The 135 St (B/C) station is right at the park's edge; 137 St–City College (1) is also close
- It's outdoors on a lawn, so bring a blanket or be ready to stand
- Good for kids and newcomers to dance, since the work is famously playful
- St. Nicholas Park is hilly; the 135th Street entrance is the low, flat side
- Weather can affect outdoor performances, so check Pigeonwing's social channels
