Warhol's private Polaroids of friends, celebrities, travels and his dog Archie reach the Whitney.
Before the silkscreen portraits came the snapshots: Warhol shot these Polaroids in 1972 and 1973 with his Big Shot and SX-70 cameras, filling Holson albums with collaborators, celebrities, friends, days at his Montauk house, trips through Europe and his dachshund Archie. The Whitney pulls from one of six albums holding hundreds of pictures, so you get Warhol's world at arm's length. Visiting for the Biennial or Lichtenstein? Head up to Floor 7 first.
What to expect
Expect rows of small, instant photographs rather than big canvases — posed portraits next to casual candids, arranged the way Warhol's own albums kept them. The Big Shot and SX-70 Polaroids shown here fed directly into his commissioned silkscreen portraits, which the show explains.
