Choreographer Sarah Michelson has treated MoMA's soaring Marron Atrium as her daily studio for a month, dancing, thinking and working with a rotating cast in full view of museum visitors. The piece, which grew out of her 2024 Studio residency at MoMA, asks a stubbornly simple question: what is dance? If you have only ever seen dance on a stage, catch its last days before the atrium goes quiet.
What to expect
Walk into the atrium and you may find Michelson and dancers mid-practice, rehearsing or performing while the museum carries on around them — there are no set showtimes to wait for. On Fridays the atrium becomes an open space for dance makers, arts workers and anyone who wanders in, hosted by Michelson and guests.
