Free boards and an on-site host across from the Reading Room — the Midtown answer to the Washington Square tables, minus the wager.

New York's other famous outdoor chess is at Washington Square, where the tables come with hustlers and a fee; Bryant Park's is free, staffed and open to anyone who wants a board. It sits across from the Reading Room under the trees, so you can play a slow game with the New York Public Library at your back and no money on the line.

What to expect

Check in with the host, take a set, and play at one of the tables on the north side. The attendant can find you an opponent and help with rules. Play is casual — there are no clocks unless someone brings one — and games run at whatever pace you want.

Good to know

  • 42nd Street–Bryant Park on the B/D/F/M is the nearest station
  • Boards and pieces are provided free — nothing to bring
  • Turn up alone and the host will pair you with another player
  • Nobody plays for money here, unlike the Washington Square tables
  • The chess area sits opposite the Reading Room on the north side

Common questions

Do I need to bring a chess set?

No. Free equipment is provided and an attendant oversees the area.

Can I play if I came alone?

Yes. Check in with the host, who can pair you with another player looking for a game.

Is there a charge?

None. Play and equipment are both free.
