For years Smorgasburg meant a trip to the Brooklyn waterfront; this season it finally opened a Central Park outpost, with long midday-to-evening hours that suit office lunches and after-work grazing. Its setting off Central Park West puts picnic lawns and the park's southern paths steps away. If you have not tried the new Manhattan market yet, a late-summer afternoon is the time.

What to expect

A compact row of vendor stalls near the park's edge, a lunchtime rush from Midtown and Upper West Side office workers, and a steadier crowd into the evening. Most people carry their food into the park to eat on benches or the grass, turning the market into a picnic stop.

Good to know

  • Take the A, B, C, D or 1 to 59 St–Columbus Circle and walk north along Central Park West
  • Hours run from midday into the evening, so it works for lunch or an early dinner
  • Carry your food into the park and find a bench or lawn to picnic
  • Check Smorgasburg's New York page for the location's current days, which have changed during the season
  • Bring a tote for leftovers and napkins for a picnic

Going? Keep it.
