For years The People's Theatre made its shows in borrowed rooms and church basements. Saturday is the first day anyone can walk into its own 19,000-square-foot building in Inwood, which bills itself as the city's first performing arts center built around immigrant stories. You get a look at the new 208-seat theater, Scherezade Garcia's mural Liquid Highway, and a preview of GUAC, the company's first mainstage show there.
What to expect
Something is happening on every floor: short performances, hands-on workshops, open classes and backstage tours, with groups such as Dance Project of Washington Heights, Spellbound Theatre and the Dominican Writers Association. The afternoon ends with a Jazz Power Initiative concert at 5 PM. Food and drinks are sold on site.

- Advance reservations are full. Join the waiting list or just show up; the theater lets waiting-list guests in as space opens, but entry is not guaranteed.
- Take the 1 train to 207 St, a short walk from West 206th Street.
- It's a good day for kids: family activities are on the schedule.
- Pair it with a walk in Inwood Hill Park, a few blocks north.
