Marine Atlan shot her own debut about a group of French high schoolers on a class trip to Naples, where frescoes, museums and the volcanic sites near Pompeii become the backdrop for crushes, jealousy and self-invention. Working-class Toni believes he descends from Neapolitan aristocrats, and James plays the lothario. If you love coming-of-age films with real texture, this one earns its length.
What to expect
A 145-minute ensemble drama with a cast of teenage newcomers and a weary Latin teacher, set against ancient ruins. Expect escalating tension and emotional precision rather than a quick teen comedy.
