Phelim McDermott relocates Mozart's comedy of swapped lovers to a 1950s Coney Island amusement park, complete with a Skills Ensemble of real circus performers: fire-eaters, sword-swallowers and contortionists. Gerald Finley returns as the cynical Don Alfonso, with Federica Lombardi and Samantha Hankey as the sisters being tested. If you think opera is stuffy, this is the production that proves otherwise.
What to expect
Expect a bright, funny evening of Mozart ensembles sung in Italian, with Met Titles translating on the seat back. The boardwalk setting brings sideshow energy, and the circus performers turn up throughout the staging.
