La Bohème is the opera people fall in love with first: young artists, a candle blown out in a cold attic, and Musetta's waltz in a packed Parisian café. Zeffirelli's production is famous for its second-act street scene, which fills the Met stage with chorus and extras. If you have never been to the Met, a Bohème matinee is the easiest yes.
What to expect
Expect four short acts of soaring Puccini sung in Italian, with seat-back titles translating as it goes. The matinee crowd mixes families, tourists and longtime subscribers, and the Chagall murals in the lobby windows are worth arriving early for.
