Before roads, rivers were colonial New York's highways, and historian Terrell L. Armistead uses a walk along the Bronx River at River Park to tell how that water shaped Lenape life and the lives of enslaved and free Africans. The walk honors Morgan Powell, the Bronx River Restoration founder whose Bronx Sankofa research recovered the histories of Black and Brown Bronxites. If you want Bronx history you won't get from a textbook, this is a rare guided look.
What to expect
The group meets at 180th Street and Boston Road and walks the riverside paths of River Park for about two hours, pausing for Armistead's stories about ecology and community history along the way.
