Harlem's parks trace a dramatic schist ridge, and this ranger-led hike strings three of them together from Morningside Park to St. Nicholas Park and on to Jackie Robinson Park. Along the way rangers explain the geology that shaped the cliffs and the history of the neighborhoods above them. If you want to see Harlem from its stairways and outcrops on a fall afternoon, lace up.
What to expect
Expect a steady walk of a couple of hours with stair climbs and hilly stretches, pausing at viewpoints and rock outcrops. The group ends at the far end of Jackie Robinson Park, so plan your ride home from there.
Good to know
- Meet at Manhattan Avenue and West 110th Street; the B or C to Cathedral Parkway–110th Street is steps away.
- Expect stairs and steep paths; wear sturdy shoes.
- Bring water.
- The hike ends at the north end of Jackie Robinson Park near 155th Street, close to the B, D and C trains.
